Objectives

The role of the two-year "First Cycle" is to change freshly integrated secondary education students into future INSA Engineers. The "First Cycle" provides the bases required in science, technology and humanities, in order to follow the specialisation programmes of the engineering training. This generalist First Cycle ensures that all INSA engineers acquire a solid background in terms of skills and competence, thus allowing them to reorient their career independently of their initial specialisation. The purpose of the First Cycle is also to provide students with work methods indispensable to the success of their engineering studies, methods that will also prove useful throughout their professional career.

Pedagogical structure

Given the large number of students at Lyon (1500 students) and also due to the diversity of the educational staff (approximately 200 faculty members), the First Cycle, offers several programmes structured as follows:

• A classical First Cycle constitutes the main core of the programmes. It welcomes 1200 students over two years.
• Three international programmes concern French students and students from other European countries (EURINSA), Asian students (ASINSA) and Latin American students (AMERINSA). The first cycle programme is also offered in English through the SCAN section (Science et Anglais).
• An Active Science Training programme designed to integrate secondary education students possessing an STI diploma into the engineering curriculum.
• A Sports focused programme ("Sport-Etudes"), specially adapted to conciliate top athlete's needs for the practice of their sport during their First Cycle studies.

Although these programmes are independent of one another, their common objective is to provide engineers with rigorous initial scientific training, also to ensure that students possess the human qualities and open-mindedness that characterises top level engineers.

Subjects

The courses are divided into two semesters (fifteen weeks each), with an average of 30 hours per week (Monday to Friday).
Students must be prepared to put in a lot of personal work (approximately 20 h/week).
There are also optional "thematic" courses that vary according to the programme. These are designed to broaden the scope of subjects traditionally taught as part of the engineering curriculum. The total number of hours required for the courses may vary slightly depending on the programme. The table hereunder lists the courses available for 2004-05:

Evaluations

Regardless of the programme chosen for the First Cycle, the evaluations have for objective to help students assess their competences, the knowledge they have acquired, and to point out possible weaknesses. To this effect, academic guidance interviews can be proposed following the intermediary assessments. Evaluations are based on continuous assessments including:

Written exams concerning the knowledge acquired as part of the courses.
Summary papers prepared for each semester.

Lab work exercises, held at the end of the term.

Juries, and choosing the specialised programmes

So as to respect the pedagogical autonomy of the different programmes, the evaluations, as well as the juries are organised in an independent manner.
At the end of the 1st year, the different juries assess the students' capability, as demonstrated during the first year, to successfully undertake the INSA Engineer training programme via the First Cycle. If it is deemed unsuitable for a student to pursue the First Cycle, a personalised reorientation will be proposed. It is exceptional for the jury to grant permission to retake the 1st year. The juries may only grant such permission if they consider that there is a valid social or medical condition to account for a student's poor academic results.
Conferences addressing engineering professions and also presentations introducing the 12 specialisation programmes of the 2nd cycle are held throughout the two years of the 1st Cycle.
Access to these 2nd Cycle specialisation programmes is based upon the wishes expressed by the students themselves, also upon a general academic ranking common to all First Cycle students. The number of students that will be accepted on each specialisation programme is known in advance. A software application is available to assist students with their choice, taking into account, in real-time, their ranking and their wishes in terms of orientation.

* Completion of the common core courses will allow entry into all the Schools of Engineering, subject to individual schools' space management requirements. These include: ENGR 100/103/104, a First-Year General Education course, and the following courses upon which the Engineering Admisisons Index (EAI) will be based: MA 165/161, MA 166/162/173, CHM 115/123, ENGL 106/108, ENGR 126, PHYS 172, and the Science Selective.
+ A First-Year General Education Elective course will be selected from the College of Engineering approved list of General Education Electives. Students are encouraged to select COM 114 as their First-Year General Education course, since it may be required by individual schools. A course taken to fulfill the First-Year General Education requirement will not count towards the 18 hours of required General Education Elective.
± Science Selectives:

Individual schools may require or recommend a Science Seletive. Information may be obtained from the FYE prograom Advising office.
Science selectives are a 2nd semester of either general chemistry or computer programming.
- Second semester of General Chemistry: CHM 116, 124, 136
- CS 159, ENGR 117
Students who are undecided should discuss Science Seletive with an advisor.

‡ Students who intend on majoring in AAE, CE, CEM, LSGE or ME and have room in their schedule may also register for the appropriate computer graphics course.
° Students with room in their schedule may elect to take additional seminars or courses such as: ENGR 194 or 180, EPCS 101, MSE 190, ABE 120, NE 110, ROTC and Band courses.

the world and so in USA, so you have to choose a university in USA (for example ) and you can enter its website and browse the courses of each engineering branch and then compare them with the courses you have in egypt ,but in all, there are common courses that have been teaching in any university or college in engineering field
يعنى بيقولولى إن الكورسات فى امريكا بتختلف من جامعة لجامعة
وعلشان كدة دخل موقع الجامعة اللى إنت عايزها وتستعرض الكورسات بتاعت القسم اللى إنت عايزه وقارن بينها وبين الكورسات فى مصر
وبوجه عام فى كورسات شائعة لازم تتعلمها فى أى كلية فى مجال الهندسة
