In this detailed history of domestic architecture in West Africa, Peter
Mark shows how building styles are closely associated with social
status and ethnic identity. Mark documents the ways in which local
architecture was transformed by long-distance trade and complex social
and cultural interactions between local Africans, African traders from
the interior, and the Portuguese explorers and traders who settled in
the Senegambia region. What came to be known as "Portuguese" style
symbolized the wealth and power of Luso-Africans, who identified
themselves as "Portuguese" so they could be distinguished from their
African neighbors. They were traders, spoke Creole, and practiced
Christianity. But what did this mean? Drawing from travelers' accounts,
maps, engravings, paintings, and photographs, Mark argues that both the
style of "Portuguese" houses and the identity of those who lived in
them were extremely fluid. "Portuguese" Style and Luso-African Identity
sheds light on the dynamic relationship between identity formation,
social change, and material culture in West Africa.

Eyeglasses have been transformed from medical necessity to fashion
accessory. This revolution has come about through embracing the design
culture of the fashion industry. Why shouldn't design sensibilities
also be applied to hearing aids, prosthetic limbs, and communication
aids? In return, disability can provoke radical new directions in
mainstream design. Charles and Ray Eames's iconic furniture was
inspired by a molded plywood leg splint that they designed for injured
and disabled servicemen. Designers today could be similarly inspired by
disability.



In Design Meets Disability, Graham Pullin shows us how design and
disability can inspire each other. In the Eameses' work there was a
healthy tension between cut-to-the-chase problem solving and more
playful explorations. Pullin offers examples of how design can meet
disability today. Why, he asks, shouldn't hearing aids be as
fashionable as eyewear? What new forms of braille signage might
proliferate if designers kept both sighted and visually impaired people
in mind? Can simple designs avoid the need for complicated
accessibility features? Can such emerging design methods as "experience
prototyping" and "critical design" complement clinical trials?



Pullin also presents a series of interviews with leading designers
about specific disability design projects, including stepstools for
people with restricted growth, prosthetic legs (and whether they can be
both honest and beautifully designed), and text-to-speech technology
with tone of voice. When design meets disability, the diversity of
complementary, even contradictory, approaches can enrich each field.

powerful sense of self, including playing games, comparing themselves
to other workers and guests, and forming meaningful and reciprocal
relations with guests. Through their contact with hotel staff, guests
learn how to behave in the luxury environment and come to see
themselves as deserving of luxury consumption. These practices, Sherman
argues, help make class inequality seem normal, something to be taken
for granted. Throughout, Class Acts sheds new light on the complex
relationship between class and service work, an increasingly relevant
topic in light of the growing economic inequality in the United States
that underlies luxury consumption.

architectural meaning in what seem to me to be the only authentic terms

This small book on small dwellings explores some of the largest
questions that can be posed about architecture. What begins where
architecture ends? What was before architecture?

The ostensible subject of Ann Cline's inquiry is the primitive hut, a
one-room structure built of common or rustic materials. Does the
proliferation of these structures in recent times represent escapist
architectural fantasy, or deeper cultural impulses? As she addresses
this question, Cline gracefully weaves together two stories: one of
primitive huts in times of cultural transition, and the other of
diminutive structures in our own time of architectural transition. From
these narrative strands emerges a deeper inquiry: what are the limits
of architecture? What ghosts inhabit its edges? What does it mean to
dwell outside it?

Cline's project began twenty-five years ago, when she set out to
translate the Japanese tea ritual into an American idiom. First
researching the traditional tea practices of Japan, then building and
designing huts in the United States, she attempted to make the
"translation" from one culture to another through the use of common
American building materials and technology. But her investigation
eventually led her to look at many nonarchitectural ideas and sources,
for the hut exists both at the beginning of and at the farthest edge of
architecture, in the margins between what architecture is and what it
is not.

In the resulting narrative, she blends autobiography, historical
research, and cultural criticism to consider the place that such
structures as shacks, teahouses, follies, casitas, and diners--simple,
"undesigned" places valued for their timelessness and
authenticity--occupy from both a historical and contemporary
perspective. This book is an original and imaginative attempt to
rethink architecture by studying its boundary conditions and formative
structures.

The Scottish urbanist and biologist Patrick Geddes (1854-1932) is
perhaps best known for introducing the concept of "region" to
architecture and planning. At the turn of the twentieth century, he was
one of the strongest advocates of town planning and an active
participant in debates about the future of the city. He was arguably
the first planner to recognize the importance of historic city centers,
and his renewal work in Edinburgh’s Old Town is visible and impressive
to this day. Geddes's famous analytical triad--place, work, and folk,
corresponding to the geographical, historical, and spiritual aspects of
the city--provides the basic structure of this examination of his urban
theory. Volker Welter examines Geddes’s ideas in the light of
nineteenth-century biology--in which Geddes received his academic
training—-showing Geddes’s use of biological concepts to be far more
sophisticated than popular images of the city as an organic entity. His
urbanism was informed by his lifelong interest in the theory of
evolution and in ecology, cutting-edge areas in the late nineteenth
century. Balancing Geddes’s biological thought is his interest in the
historical Greek concept of polis, usually translated as city-state but
implying a view of the city as a cultural and spiritual phenomenon.
Although Geddes’s work was far-ranging, the city provided the unifying
focus of nearly all of his theoretical and practical work. Throughout
the book, Welter relates Geddes’s theory of the city to contemporary
European debates about architecture and urbanism.

To be outside allows one a fresh perspective on the inside. In these
essays, philosopher Elizabeth Grosz explores the ways in which two
disciplines that are fundamentally outside each another--architecture
and philosophy--can meet in a third space to interact free of their
internal constraints. "Outside" also refers to those whose voices are
not usually heard in architectural discourse but who inhabit its
space--the destitute, the homeless, the sick, and the dying, as well as
women and minorities. Grosz asks how we can understand space
differently in order to structure and inhabit our living arrangements
accordingly. Two themes run throughout the book: temporal flow and
sexual specificity. Grosz argues that time, change, and emergence,
traditionally viewed as outside the concerns of space, must become more
integral to the processes of design and construction. She also argues
against architecture’s historical indifference to sexual specificity,
asking what the existence of (at least) two sexes has to do with how we
understand and experience space. Drawing on the work of such
philosophers as Henri Bergson, Roger Caillois, Gilles Deleuze, Jacques
Derrida, Luce Irigaray, and Jacques Lacan, Grosz raises abstract but
nonformalistic questions about space, inhabitation, and building. All
of the essays propose philosophical experiments to render space and
building more mobile and dynamic.

Site-specific art emerged in the late 1960s in reaction to the growing
commodification of art and the prevailing ideals of art's autonomy and
universality. Throughout the 1970s and 1980s, as site-specific art
intersected with land art, process art, performance art, conceptual
art, installation art, institutional critique, community-based art, and
public art, its creators insisted on the inseparability of the work and
its context. In recent years, however, the presumption of
unrepeatability and immobility encapsulated in Richard Serra's famous
dictum "to remove the work is to destroy the work" is being challenged
by new models of site specificity and changes in institutional and
market forces. One Place after Another offers a critical history of
site-specific art since the late 1960s and a theoretical framework for
examining the rhetoric of aesthetic vanguardism and political
progressivism associated with its many permutations. Informed by urban
theory, postmodernist criticism in art and architecture, and debates
concerning identity politics and the public sphere, the book addresses
the siting of art as more than an artistic problem. It examines site
specificity as a complex cipher of the unstable relationship between
location and identity in the era of late capitalism. The book addresses
the work of, among others, John Ahearn, Mark Dion, Andrea Fraser,
Donald Judd, René¥ Green, Suzanne Lacy, Iñ§¯ Manglano-Ovalle, Richard

Although both are central to architecture, siting and construction are
often treated as separate domains. In Uncommon Ground, David
Leatherbarrow illuminates their relationship, focusing on the years
between 1930 and 1960, when utopian ideas about the role of technology
in building gave way to an awareness of its disruptive impact on cities
and culture. He examines the work of three architects, Richard Neutra,
Antonin Raymond, and Aris Konstantinidis, who practiced in the United
States, Japan, and Greece respectively. Leatherbarrow rejects the
assumption that buildings of the modern period, particularly those that
used the latest technology, were designed without regard to their
surroundings. Although the prefabricated elements used in the buildings
were designed independent of siting considerations, architects used
these elements to modulate the environment. Leatherbarrow shows how the
role of walls, the traditional element of architectural definition and
platform partition, became less significant than that of the platforms
themselves, the floors, ceilings, and intermediate levels. He shows how
frontality was replaced by the building's four-sided extension into its
surroundings, resulting in frontal configurations previously
characteristic of the back. Arguing that the boundary between inside
and outside was radically redefined, Leatherbarrow challenges cherished
notions about the autonomy of the architectural object and about
regional coherence. Modern architectural topography, he suggests, is an
interplay of buildings, landscapes, and cities, as well as the humans
who use them. The conflict between technological progress and cultural
continuity, Leatherbarrow claims, exists only in theory, not in the
real world of architecture. He argues that the act of building is not a
matter of restoring regional identity by re-creating familiar signs,
but of incorporating construction into the process of topography's
perpetual becoming.

Cultural theorists have, over the past few decades, examined the role
of travel in spatial definition, and have noted its significance in the
