This book serves as a background for students in Structural and
Civil Engineering. Since the available hours for teaching Steel
Structures and particularly Tubular Structures vary from country to
country, this book has been written in a modular form. To cover the
needs in the various countries, a committee was established to review
the material. Although the material is mainly based on the Eurocodes,
the setup makes it easy to change the lectures and relate them to other
(national)codes.

Design is an interactive process between the functional and
architectural requirements and the strength and fabrication aspects. In
a good design, all these aspects have to be considered in a balanced
way. Due to the special features of hollow sections and their
connections it is even here of more importance than for steel
structures of open sections. The designer should therefore be aware of
the various aspects of hollow sections, as basically described in this
book.

For nearly a century the Garden City movement has represented one end
of a continuum in an ongoing debate about the future of the modern
city. In 1898 Ebenezer Howard envisioned an experimental community as
the alternative to huge, teeming cities. Small, planned "garden cities"
girdled by greenbelts were to serve in time as the "master key" to a
higher, more cooperative stage of civilization based on ecologically
balanced communities. Howard soon founded an international planning
movement which ever since has represented a remarkable blend of
accommodation to and protest against urban changes and the rise of the
suburbs. In this interconnected history of the Garden City movement in
the United States and Britain, Buder examines its influence, strengths
and limitations. Howard's garden city, he shows, joined together two
very different types of late-nineteenth-century experimental
communities, creating a tension never fully resolved. One approach,
utopian and radical in nature, challenged conventional values; the
other, the model industrial towns of "enlightened" capitalists,
reinforceed them. Buder traces this tension through planning history
from the nineteenth-century world of visionaries, philanthropy, and
self help into our own with its reliance on the expert, bureaucracy,
and governmental policy, shedding light on the complex changes in the
way we have thought in the twentieth century about community, urban
design, and indeed the process of change. His final chapters examine
the world-wide enthusiasm for "New Towns" between 1945-1975 and recent
political and social trends which challenge many fundamental
assumptions of modern planning.

By the first years of the twentieth century the memory of old-time New
England was in danger. What had once been a land of small towns
populated by tradition-minded Yankees was now becoming almost
unrecognizable with a floodtide of immigrants and the constant change
of a modernizing society. At the same time, cities such as Boston,
Portsmouth, and Salem were bursting at the seams with factories,
high-rises, and uncontrollable growth. During a period when the
Colonial Revival and progressive movements held sway, Yankees asserted
their influence through campaigns to redefine the meaning of their
Anglo-American forebears. As part of the reaction, the modern
preservation movement was founded by William Sumner Appleton, Jr., a
privileged, old-blooded Bostonian. Resisting not simply this avalanche
of change but the amateurish romanticism of fellow antiquaries,
Appleton founded the Society for the Preservation of New England
Antiquities in 1910. While examining SPNEA in the context of
progressivism, Preserving Historic New England focuses on its
redefinition of preservation to fit the methodology of science, the
economy of capitalism, and the aestheticism of architecture. In so
doing, preservation not only became a profession defined by those male
worlds, but remade Yankee memory to accord with the modern corporate
order.

The main objective of the COST Action C13 was to increase the
knowledge of properties and possibilities of glazing in order to
increase the performance of building envelopes, to reduce the energy
consumption and to improve the quality of life with respect to interior
space, impact on the environment and human welfare. This collection of
papers presented at meetings and workshops of the COST C13 working
groups 1 (Architectural Aspects and Design Integration), 2 (Quality of
Interior Space) and 3 (Structural Aspects of Glass) are the result of 5
years of exchange of ideas, experiences and know-how between members,
delegates and experts. It represents the body of knowledge from a
restricted but representative group of professionals in Europe on the
subject of glass building envelopes. The Steel Structures Laboratory at
Ecole Polytechnique Farale de Lausanne (CH) and the research group
'Fasades & Systems' of the Faculty of Architecture at Delft
University of Technology (NL) have taken the initiative to publish
these COST C13 papers in order to disseminate the knowledge to the
